UK and European markets opened muted after a roller-coaster week for global stocks, with investor focus now turning to a key U.S. jobs report.

Asia-Pacific markets closed higher as markets on Wall Street rallied.

Oil prices rose on signs some industries have begun switching fuel from high priced gas to oil and on doubts the U.S. government would release oil from its strategic reserves for now.

Gold held steady as investors stayed away from making big bets ahead of the U.S. non-farm payrolls report that is considered key to the Federal Reserve’s stimulus taper timeline.

In corporate news, Royal Mail said it had bought Canadian logistics company Mid-Nite Sun Transportation for CAD$360m (£210.5m).

Mid-Nite Sun is one of the largest independent freight carriers in Western Canada that operates as Rosenau Transport, Royal Mail said, adding the deal was being done via its General Logistics Systems unit (GLS).
