UK and European markets opened in mixed territory as global jitters over artificial intelligence tech rivalry between the U.S. and China ease.
Asian stocks advanced to follow Wall Street’s tech-led rebound from a selloff that shook global markets, as focus turns to the Federal Reserve’s rate decision and US mega-cap earnings.
Oil prices steadied as investors weighed the impact of potential U.S. tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports, while largely shrugging off an increase in U.S. weekly crude inventory.
Gold prices were little changed as market participants awaited the U.S. interest rate verdict, while the spotlight was also on President Donald Trump’s trade policies amid fresh tariff threats.
WH Smith posted a 4% jump in revenue for the 21 weeks to 25 January as it hailed strong momentum in the travel business, while high street sales fell as expected.
Total travel revenue rose 8% at constant currency and 6% on a like-for-like basis, while revenue from the high street business fell 6% and 3%, respectively.
