UK
& European stocks fell at the open following strong gains at the start of the week, as investors mulled
the latest UK jobs data.
Asia-Pacific markets were
mixed, following gains on Wall Street that saw both the S&P
500 and Nasdaq Composite rebound from their worst week of the year.
Oil was steady in early
trade as investors weighed supply disruptions from Tropical
Storm Francine and the potential for further output cuts against persistently
weak Chinese demand.
Gold prices eased,
pressured by a firmer dollar, while traders braced for key U.S. inflation
figures that could offer hints about the size of the Federal Reserve's interest
rate reduction next week.
In corporate news, gold miner Centamin
said it had agreed to be taken over by AngloGold
Ashanti in a £1.9bn deal.
Under the terms of the transaction, Centamin shareholders will receive 0.06983
new AngloGold Ashanti shares and $0.125 in cash.
The price represents a premium of around 36.7% to the closing share price on
Monday.
