UK & Europeanstocks were higheras investors look ahead to
more central bank decisions, earnings and data this week.
Wall Street stocks were in
the greenearly on as investors braced for more corporate
earnings, some key labour market data and the outcome of the Federal Reserve's
two-day policy meeting.
Gold prices rosehelped by a softer U.S. dollar, while investors waited for the Federal Reserve
policy meeting and U.S. non-farm payrolls data due this week for policy clues.
Oil prices dipped
as Israel-Hamas ceasefire talks in Cairo tempered fears of a wider Middle East
conflict, while U.S. inflation data dimmed the prospect of interest rate cuts
soon.
Mining giant BHP
and its Brazilian joint venture partner have submitted a $25.7bn (£20.5bn)
settlement for the collapse of a tailings dam in 2015 that killed 19 people and
devastated the local community.
Samarco, the joint company set up by Australian BHP and Brazilian operator
Vale, has so far paid out $3.5bn. The new offer is a “non-binding, indicative
settlement proposal” within BHP Brazil's provision for the dam failure.
“The negotiations between the parties are ongoing and no final agreement has
been reached on the settlement amount or terms,” BHP said in a statement.
