UK and European markets opened lower as investors look
ahead to more key economic data this week, including U.S. inflation figures out
Wednesday.
Asia-Pacific markets were
mixed as investors assessed consumer confidence data from
Japan, with focus also on U.S. inflation numbers to assess the Federal
Reserve’s rate cut path.
Gold prices rose, hovering
near a record peak hit in the previous session, supported by firm central bank
buying, while investors watched out for the Federal Reserve’s policy meeting
minutes and U.S. inflation data for fresh signals.
Oil prices rose in
early Asian trading after hopes diminished that negotiations
between Israel and Hamas would lead to a ceasefire in Gaza and ease tension in
the Middle East.
In corporate news, oil giant BP ticked
up after saying it expects first-quarter upstream production to be higher than
the previous three months.
