& European stocks opened in mixed territory after sharp declines in global markets on
Monday.
Sharesin Asia-Pacific
mostly tumbled after the S&P 500 fell overnight
and closed in bear market territory.
Oil prices seesawed,
holding up despite recession fears and potential new Covid-19 curbs in China
that could dampen demand as the market remains tightly supplied.
Gold hovered near a
four-week low but prices remained largely pressured by a strong
dollar and investors dumping bullion to cover for losses in other assets.
In corporate news, equipment rental company Ashteadsaid it had
delivered a record full-year, with both revenue and profits up following a
solid fourth-quarter showing.
Ashtead said full-year revenues were up 19% at $7.96bn, with annual rental
revenues 24% stronger at $7.23bn.
