UK and European stocks opened lower as concerns around global growth and inflation continue to rattle market sentiment.

Shares in mainland China were higher as investors reacted to the release of Chinese trade data for September.

Oil prices dropped amid worries that soaring coal and natural gas prices in China, India and Europe will stoke inflation and slow global growth, reducing oil demand.

Gold prices held steady, helped by a slight pullback in U.S. dollar.

In corporate news, house builder Barratt said strong demand for its homes had continued into the current fiscal year despite a reduction in government incentives, and stated that it was on track to deliver full-year medium targets.

Barratt added that it had not experienced any disruption to its building programme as a result of the Brexit-related supply chain crisis currently gripping the UK.
