European stocks inch higher as global markets rally;
UniCredit falls 4% after making offer for Banco BPM.
US open:
Strong start to holiday-shortened trading week.
Oil prices
steadied on Monday following 6% gains last week, with mounting tensions between
Western powers and major oil producers Russia and Iran raising fears of supply
disruptions and keeping a floor under prices
Gold prices
declined as much as 2% on Monday as investors booked profits following a
five-session rally to a three-week high, while the announcement of fund manager
Scott Bessent as the new U.S. Treasury Secretary tempered safe-haven buying.
Barclays Bank has
been fined £40m by Britain’s financial regulator over alleged secret payments
to Qatar during the 2008 global financial crisis to avoid a UK government
bailout.
Shares in ITV surged
on Monday following a report over the weekend that potential suitors have begun
circling the broadcaster again after a prolonged period of share price weakness
and renewed questions about its long-term strategic destiny.
