UK & European stocks closed down in the afternoon trade.

Wall Street stocks were mixed as traders digested last month's all-important nonfarm payrolls report.

Gold prices eased, retreating from near-record levels reached earlier, after mixed U.S. jobs data cast doubts on the scale of interest-rate cut from the Federal Reserve this month.

Oil pared gains after data showed U.S. employment increased less than expected in August, and was on track for a heavy weekly loss as demand concerns outweighed a delay to supply increases by OPEC+ producers.

In corporate news, The UK competition watchdog has accused Alphabet’s Google of using its dominant position in digital advertising to hinder competition and favour its own services.

Releasing its provisional findings following an investigation, the Competition and Markets Authority said it believed Google had abused its dominant positions through the operation of both its publisher ad server and buying tools to restrict competition in the UK.

In addition, it found that Google “self-preferences” its own ad exchange, which harmed both competition and potentially thousands of British advertisers and publishers.
