British Airways has begun cancelling flights to America over concerns signals from 5G mobile phone masts could endanger the lives of passengers.

The UK flag carrier has been forced to axe a handful of Boeing 777 services after it emerged that 5G signals could interfere with cockpit altimeters, which measure the aircraft’s height.

Altimeters are a crucial piece of equipment that allows pilots to take off and land in bad weather and when visibility is poor. As a precaution, British Airways has switched these services to Airbus aircraft.

British Airways is the flag carrier airline for the United Kingdom.

UK and European stocks closed slightly higher, seemingly shrugging off concerns about rising bond yields as well as historic U.K. inflation levels.

U.S. stocks were mixed after a broad sell-off a day earlier, as investors nervously eyed soaring bond yields and mixed earnings results from some major index components.

Oil prices rose to a seven-year high as an outage on a pipeline from Iraq to Turkey increased concerns about an already tight supply outlook amid worrisome geopolitical troubles in Russia and the United Arab Emirates.

Gold edged higher, but moves were fairly contained as the market looked to U.S. Federal Reserve’s next policy meeting where it is widely expected to raise rates in an attempt to quell surging inflation.
